Disappointed

I discovered today why I get the college students I get in my classes. The educational system just passes students through, like cattle, never expecting any really learning, just an endless procession, one grade to another. I met with Zach's teacher and counselor this morning to discuss how he got all As when he did not complete a good part of his work. I was told that the teachers are not allowed to give zeros, and that the lowest grade in each subject is automatically dropped by the grading system. I went through and averaged the grades how they should have appeared, and his grades should have read and will shortly, F,C,A,C- .
I am so totally annoyed by the school system. Not even annoyed really. Disappointed more. Children are not being held accountable for their own learning. Educators and Administrators are doing a disservice to children by allowing them to pass from grade to grade whether they have the mastery or not. How has this come to be the common practice? No zeros? No grade lower than a 70? Who says?
