Wow - has it been that long!?

I had no idea it had been so long since I posted last. The days get away from me when I am teaching.

College students have a different work ethic today. I only graduated with my Master's degree in 2003, and I am currently working on my PhD, but I never assumed that a professor would accept late work. I never expected a professor to allow me to revise for a better grade. I never blamed a professor for my lack of responsibility for my own learning.

When did students become entitled to an education? When did it become acceptable to feel that a student could get a passing grade simply by showing up for class? All of these questions are rhetorical of course, but if anyone has an answer, I would love to hear it!

Yea for Christmas break!

  1. Wow. We haven’t even started class and I am already nervous. If I did not have three kids and a nagging wife I would completely devote myself to two things; work and school. I do take deadlines very seriously. From reading your blogs it seems you have been very busy. I am sure late assignments and revising work for a better grade is incredibly inconvenient for you. I know the type that try to get by with the least amount of effort, (generally that is me in my math classes:) As a poet I am more concerned with learning than with actual due dates. I also think the important part of a teachers job is to teach the material, and that teaching promptness and personal responsibility was the job of parents, and pre-college teachers, even if they have neglected this important work. I am also sure the warmth a teacher feels after a student has really learned something is worth a little inconvenience, even if the student learned something after the due date. I can not tell you what I would do, because I am not the teacher, but I hope any exceptions you make are appreciated. I do not plan to be late with my assignments this semester. Hopefully the class will be straightforward and well explained, (some on-line classes can be incredibly confusing.) I won’t promise anything except that you won’t get any hate mail from me. Good luck with the teaching adventure! Oh yeah maybe you could work this topic into an extra credit assingment?
