I'm taking a break from my self-indulged life to look at the tragedy in Japan and surrounding areas also affected by the 8+ earthquake. It is easy to become egocentric and forget that everything does not revolve around just one individual. The devastation in Japan, the loss, has really touched me today. I was awoken by an alert from the University of Hawaii system about a possible tsunami, triggered by the earthquake. I cried as I frantically Facebooked my friend Emma on island. She said that they were all in the safe zone, and that all was well. I was relieved for all my students and colleagues as well, but then I thought about all those in Japan who were not so lucky. How many people are missing? How many will be lost forever? How many will die, trapped, waiting for help to arrive?
It makes me see that so much is irrelevant really.
Life should be lived, every day, without regrets, without hesitation.
