Where does the love go?

I had the opportunity to spend a few days with a truly great friend and sister this week, and we talked about everything possible. One topic in particular resonated with me. I could not get it out of my head. When you love someone, but it does not work out (after many years), where does the love go? Love is not a tangible thing. You cannot pick it up and pack it in a box for later. How does a person just stop loving?

Perhaps humans just do not really understand love. Philosophers, rock stars and poets have been trying to pin down that elusive emotion, but it eludes us all. Is it really better to love and lost then to not have loved at all? I do not know. Do you love with abandon when you think you have found someone who will accept your love? How do you know if your definition of love is the same as the guy next to you? Even if it is not the all encompassing love, do you give it your all anyway?

When should you just throw in the towel and forget all about love?
