My little camper!

I dropped Zach off yesterday at Pine Cove Towers camp. He was anxious and shy. He met his counselor Slamwich, a cool guy who had a good sense of humor. I made sure we got there early so that Zach could get a top bunk. This camp is going to contain a bunch of firsts for Zach. The Towers is limited to 2nd-5th graders. There are about a 100 counselors, and all of them genuinely want to be there.

After I got Zach all settled into his "cabin," I walked him over to the pool for his swim test. He sat on the edge of a rather large pool, waiting for his turn to swim the length of the pool. He prefers to swim under water apparently. I think I will need to practice some with him on the swimming. It took him a about 15 seconds longer than the other kids, but he passed the test. He looked up, put his goggles on his head, and waved me on. I could now leave him at camp.

Now I was the anxious one. I shouldn't be really. Zach will not be roughing it at all. The "cabin," and I use this word loosely, is really more a replica of a medieval tower. He is in Stonefoot 1, where there are eight boys to a cabin, in bunk beds, which adjoins cabin 2 via a deluxe inside bathroom and showers. And the whole thing is air-conditioned! It was like I was leaving him at a resort for kids. When I went to camp, the air-conditioning came from nature. The cabins were actually cabins, made with logs, mesh screen, and spit it seemed. Wood floors were covered in dirt, and there were community bathrooms for the whole camp. Those were the days.

  1. Hope he has a good time.
I never went to a camp, myself. We just went camping up in the wilderness. I went on my first backpacking trip when I was five, and have memories of chasing bears out of camp when I was ten.
