Act like a grown up

Zach's team, the Cubs, lost to the Rangers today 4-13. It was not the Cubs best performance, but the Rangers have some great hitters. In any case, the boys tried hard, and I think they had some great plays, although one dad and one coach said otherwise. The boys are 9 years old. The fact that they have learned to stop picking grass and chasing butterflies seems to be a vast improvement from the beginning. Some of the boys have played since they were like 3 years old in blast ball and some have just started playing the game. Either way, isn't playing baseball also about fun, respect, teamwork and hard work. It is all about winning?

There are some parents on the team who feel like their kids are being slighted some how. There are 12 boys on our roster and only 9 can play on the field at once, some crazy baseball rule and all. These parents feel that their kids should play every inning, that some of the kids get preferential treatment. You know, I am so busy keeping score and making sure Zach isn't chewing a hole in his glove, that I don't have time to keep track of who sits out and who plays. I know Zach is benched sometimes and sometimes he plays every inning. It is rec ball for goodness sakes. So today two moms in particular let the head coach have it, right there, after the game, in front of God and everybody. It was ridiculous and petty. I hope they don't come back.

The worst part is that they transfer this bad attitude and behavior to their kids. These two little boys have the worst attitudes and play ethics I have ever seen. I know in the beginning I started to chime in with these saboteurs because the head coach is a little of a hard ass, but then I saw the change in Zach, saw how my attitude affected his, and decided that I would let Zach tell me when or if I should intervene on his behalf. It has not been necessary, and all the coaches have gained my respect. Coaching 12 Zachs is a lot of work!

So I say to those Moms - act like a grown up and teach better manners to your kids. It is only a game.
